Sixteen year old Newport High School student, Blaine Lints is a runner. He has been running consistently for a couple of years. In fact he is getting so good that he was running in ultra-endurance events. Blaine decided to "raise the bar" and compete in the American Cancer Society "Relay for Life" at Husky Stadium. He approached Peak Sports and Spine Physical Therapy for sponsorship.
Lints' grandmother on his mother's side died after a diagnosis of Leukemia. Blaine said, "I'll be thinking about my grandma while I'm running and those other people who have to deal with cancer". Thus, this spirited teenager decided to try something that would support the American Cancer Society for his Grandmother and additionally do something no one else has done in the past. "I,ve been training by getting up at 2 in the morning, and mixing up the laps with lunges," Blaine said.
His goals were to raise money for Cancer research and simultaneously set perhaps a couple of world records for the number of miles run by a teenager old during a 24 hour period and the fastest junior to run 100 miles.
Peak Sports and Spine Physical Therapy pledged $1000.00 to sponsor Blaine in his attempt. Physical Therapists were on the track and provided support for Blaine along with a dedicated group of friends, parents and volunteers.
As the day and night grew long Blaine continued with tireless abandonment. Blaine battled on through the night. Through overnight rain and dehydration and he even had a slight case of hypothermic shock promptly tended to by kind EMT's with a warm car.
Blaine finished the race with a new world's record for the number of miles ran by a 16 year old during a 24 hour period with 113 miles.
Overall, the relay raised over $300,000 for Cancer Research.
